Mateusz Zamkowski MD, PhD
I was born in 1986 in Gdańsk. After finishing my education at the XX High School named after Zbigniew Herbert in 2005, I began my studies at the Medical University of Gdańsk (at that time: Medical Academy in Gdańsk).
I graduated in 2011.
After completing a one-year postgraduate internship in 2011, I started my residency in general surgery at the Surgery Department of the Hospital in Tczew (head: Mirosław Trocha, MD), which I continued from 2012 at the General Surgery Department of the District Hospital in Kartuzy (specialization supervisor: Dr. n. med. Jerzy Ropel).
In 2017, I obtained the title of Doctor of Medical Sciences at the Medical Faculty of the Medical University of Gdańsk (supervisor: Dr. hab. n. med. Wojciech Makarewicz).
The subject of my doctoral thesis was a comparison of the outcomes of inguinal hernia operations using a self-fixating mesh with the classic Lichtenstein method. The entire results were based on my own scientific research.
In 2019, I obtained the title of specialist in the field of general surgery.
I have been a participant and speaker at many surgical symposia dealing both with hernia and abdominal wall surgery, as well as issues related to gastrointestinal surgery.
Since October 2021, I have been working at the Swissmed Hernia Center under the direction of Prof. dr hab. Maciej Śmietański. In 2023, I became the first Pole to pass the European specialty examination in the field of abdominal wall reconstruction (FEBS AWS).
My areas of interest include primarily hernia surgery and abdominal wall reconstructions, as well as minimally invasive techniques, but also gastrointestinal surgery.
I have participated in many internships and training courses in hernia surgery (both inguinal and anterior abdominal wall reconstruction).
Privately, I am a happy husband and father of two children. I devote most of my free time to sports (mainly soccer), and I consume tons of sci-fi and fantasy literature.
Currently, I serve as the Chairman of the Hernia Chapter of the Association of Polish Surgeons and am a member of the General Board of the Association of Polish Surgeons. Additionally, I sit on the Publications Committee of the European Hernia Society (EHS).

Multicenter, double-blind, randomized clinical trial conducted from February 2023 by 10 centers performing laparoendoscopic inguinal hernia repairs. The study is led by Dr. Mateusz Zamkowski and Prof. Maciej Śmietański.
The aim of the study is to compare two repair methods for large, simple M3 type hernias. In the first group (control group), patients are operated on according to the recommendations contained in international guidelines -> the procedure involves the implantation of a large, flat mesh (at least 12x17cm) fixed to the groin with histacryl glue. In the study group, patients have a large, three-dimensional mesh implanted, shaped to fit the groin.
The MEFI study received a grant for the best research project at the congress of the European Hernia Society in SITGES (EHS Research Grant).
The study protocol was published in the BMC Trials journal (Impact Factor - 2.5).
The study is registered at clinicaltrials.gov under the number NCT05678465.

Together with the Hernia Chapter of the Association of Polish Surgeons, we initiated an innovative educational program titled "HerniaBlast!" in 2024, consisting of a series of 6 webinars. The topics of individual lectures are chosen by members of the Polish Society of Surgeons community
Together with Professor Maciej Śmietański and scientists from the Department of Material Engineering at the Gdańsk University of Technology, we are creating an interdisciplinary team engaged in scientific research activity.
The main area of activity is the study of the distribution of forces acting within the abdominal cavity, the material strength of meshes, and the creation of models (computer and experimental) demonstrating the performance of implanted implants (hernia meshes).

Since 2023, I have been a member of the Publications Committee at the European Hernia Society (EHS). Our duties include, among others:
– Manage the collaboration agreements that EHS have with Academic Journals such as the British Journal of Surgery and Hernia (Springer).
– Manage the Production of EHS position statements as necessary.
– Manage the Production of EHS Guideline Summary documents (and their translation to common languages in the geographical area of the EHS).
– Manage the Production of Patient versions of guidelines produced by the EHS (and their translation to common languages in the geographical area of the EHS).
– Manage the production of the EHS Newsletter 6 times a year.
– Manage the production of other EHS Official publications

Together with Professor Maciej Śmietański, we undertook the organization of the largest Hernia Congress in this part of Europe. The European Solidarity Centre in Gdańsk will host the most distinguished figures from the world of hernia surgery.
On May 9, 2024, under the direction of Prof. Maciej Śmietański, we were the first to perform and document a robotic inguinal hernia repair. The entire procedure was recorded and presented in national news services. The procedure itself was presented the next day at a surgical congress in Białystok.
